Rick Ross - An Introduction to Use-Case Analysis
Unified Modeling Language; UML for short is not really a language as such. It
was formed to compile the best methods for Object Oriented Analysis and Design.
Use Case Analysis was introduced by Ivar Jacobson in his book “Object Oriented
Systems Engineering: A Use Case Driven Approach? It has become the widely
accepted technique used by OO developers to define business functionality, and
is supported by most OO modeling tools. Ivar first joined Rational, where UML
first evolved until recently when IBM decided that Rational was onto something
and perhaps this had much to do with Rational being acquired by the “Big Blue?
banner.
So why use it? Use Cases model the business process and then the application
functionality and are always intended to represent the user’s point of view;
this is why the technique is so popular. You are trying to understand what the
user wants to do, and then design and build an application to help the user do
this. Why can’t I just build my classes by hand or use my development IDE to
simplify the process? It is just too easy to become complaisant and not make
the effort to design your object model upfront.
Teams applying this approach on a project will find their design to be
dramatically more concise. Leveraging this methodology provides better design
efficiency, ultimately shortening your development lifecycle time and reducing
the ‘pain?of design change later in the project life-cycle. (Ref: ESAS01, ‘UML
?Use Case Analysis 101 ?explores in more detail the UML methodology, approach
and benefits, with emphasis on gathering and defining requirements.)

Rick Ross - How to Estimate Your Software Development
Project
It is very likely that your software development project will run overtime and
over budget if you do not empower a method to estimate the cost and duration of
your project. Traditional methods with older 2nd generation languages such C /
COBOL etc implored the use of function point analysis techniques. This
estimating was quite lengthy and unless detailed to a level where the predicted
function points equated to the actual function points would not give you an
accurate output.
In today’s development we have to estimate OO Systems which could be either web
applications, window applications or a combination of both. How is this
estimating different to older technologies? Use Cases are used in the analysis
stage of an OO system so it makes sense to use this information when
estimating. This will provide estimates dealing with the business transactions
of the application; however we would still need to take into account additional
development effort such as creative design and development, interfaces, the use
of frameworks and other software components etc. Using these estimating model
inputs will provide a more accurate output. In most cases this output is
defined as the number of man days for the full project or different stages
within the project.
